Italian Film Festival

1900 was a good year for Vandergrift. In that year, the beautiful Casino Theatre was built in the Greek Revival style. In the early years, many vaudeville artists performed there, but in 1927 the Casino was renovated to become a movie theater—the area’s largest!

By the 1980s the Casino was struggling to compete with the new mega-movie complexes that were becoming standard. It was a sad day when the theater closed to visitors, but not as sad as the prospect of demolition that followed. Enter Eugene Iagnemma, a high-school English teacher who got a community group together to preserve the building. The group’s first major accomplishment came when the Casino was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1992, the group officially became the non-profit Casino Theatre Restoration and Management, Inc., and began renovations on the building.

Since its re-opening in 1995, the Casino has provided a venue for musicals, stand-up comedians, and concerts in its 525-seat auditorium. With a history spanning over a hundred years, the Casino has hosted illustrious visitors ranging from Hoagy Carmichael, the Lone Ranger, the Three Stooges, President William Taft, and Mickey Rooney, to more modern performers such as Maynard Ferguson and the musical group The Clarks. In addition to nationally known presenters, local groups also regularly utilize the Casino for their performances.

It’s amazing what one community group with a vision can accomplish!
