Description

It’s been said that when a door shuts, a window opens. As the region’s steel mills began to close down in the 1980s, many churches responded by opening their hearts. New Brighton’s Christ Episcopal Church opened its kitchen to visitors.

By 1985, the once-prosperous Ohio-Beaver region was awash in unemployment. That same year, Christ Episcopal’s parish secretary, Dorothy Hazen, learned about a government program designed to help religious organizations establish soup kitchens. With her church’s blessing, she filled out the paperwork and was soon notified that a $10,000 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was on its way. After securing additional funding from the diocese, the Beaver Valley Episcopal Outreach — more commonly known as the soup kitchen — started cooking.

Nearly 20 years and more than 340,000 meals later, the kitchen still serves the community, and Hazen continues to serve as director. With a corps of six to 15 volunteers, the kitchen is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. According to Hazen, everybody is welcome.
