Description

From the outside, the Croatian Fraternal Union (CFU) headquarters looks like any other modern office building. But inside, visitors will discover an outstanding collection of artifacts, costumes, instruments, craftwork, and archives — all evidence of the rich, living heritage of Croatians in the New World.

For the past 100 years, Pittsburgh has been the hub for Croatians throughout North America, and the CFU has served as the driving force for the support and promotion of Croatian cultural traditions. The CFU has started regional Junior and Adult Cultural Federations in the United States and Canada that hold annual public Tamburitza Festivals featuring Croatian folk music and dance. Local lodges in southwestern Pennsylvania and around the country have built centers called “Homes” that sponsor Junior Tamburitza groups and other Croatian cultural activities.

Visitors to the CFU’s third-floor museum find exhibits of regional folk costumes, dolls, and embroidery, as well as an ornately carved desk given to the museum by the government of Croatia. Throughout the building are other treasures, such as reversed-glass paintings and line drawings by contemporary Croatian naïve artist Ivan Lackovic-Croata, along with displays of tamburitza instruments and club memorabilia. The CFU produces CDs and videos of Croatian folk arts that are available for sale in the headquarters’ gift shop.
