Description

This cemetery was the burial site for 100 members of the Harmony Society during the ten years of the group’s sojourn in Harmony. The Harmonists did not believe in marking graves with the names of the deceased. However, visitors can find the name of George Rapp’s son, Johannes, engraved on the wall, which a non-Harmonist added later at the site. In 1869, the Mennonites surrounded the area with a brick wall and put in a unique revolving stone gate that weighs one ton. The gate, which looks like a tablet, symbolizes the soul’s entrance into the afterlife and can still be used today to enter the cemetery.
