Description

The Harmony Inn building was constructed by wealthy banker, mill operator and railroad executive Austin Pearce in 1856 as his private residence. This Italianate-style house, one of the largest homes in the area, may also have been the first to have indoor plumbing. After Pearce’s fortunes declined following a failed railroad venture, the house was bought by a descendant of Abraham Ziegler, the Mennonite leader who had purchased the town from the Harmonists in 1817. The Zieglers turned the home into a hotel and saloon, adding a second story as their business expanded. The Harmony Inn has since been owned by several families. In recent years it has been renovated and is now a restaurant and lounge.
