Prairie Hikes

Description

Jennings Environmental Education Center, a 300-acre state park, is named for Dr. Otto Emery Jennings, a renowned Pennsylvania botanist who was dedicated to preserving the 20-acre relict prairie next to the Center. Prairies are unusual in Pennsylvania; this one formed 20,000 years ago during the last Ice Age. It is particularly noted for its rare blazing-star flowers, which bloom in late July and early August and are on the endangered list in Pennsylvania. In 1952 the entire prairie was designated a nature reserve for the blazing-star plant. The Center, built in 1979, provides information about the prairie and Pennsylvania wildlife with photographic displays and interpretation of the area, and hosts outdoor education programs throughout the year. Be sure to take a tour of the prairie in the summer when it is in full bloom.
