Description

The sign says “Mama Rosa’s began in Southern Italy in 1957,” but there’s more to the story than that—just ask Nick Fusca! Back in Italy the Fuscas were farmers who grew olives and tomatoes, and made and sold their own cheeses and tomato sauce. In 1960, Rosa and her husband immigrated to the U.S., and opened the first of several restaurants in the Pittsburgh area. Almost a half-century later, the family is still in the business of making taste-tempting southern Italian dishes at their restaurant in Butler. Current owner Nick Fusca, Rosa’s son, has been involved at the restaurant since childhood. He oversees the cooking of their homemade pasta and the canning of their sauces using produce from local farms. Now in her 80s, Rosa Fusca herself still grows some of the herbs used in those sauces. After a good meal at the restaurant, you can buy some of Mama Rosa’s sauces to take home, or look for them in local grocery stores.
