Description

The Monessen Heritage Museum offers visitors a look at the ethnic heritage of Monessen and the city’s history as a center of steelmaking in the mid-Monongahela Valley. The Museum building first served as a boarding house for mill workers at the Pittsburgh Steel Company, Monessen’s largest employer, then housed many different businesses before its renovation by the Greater Monessen Historical Society. The Heritage Museum has displays of artifacts and photos on the first floor and a research library on the second floor. Exhibits showcase the heritage of Carpatho-Rusyns, Italians, African Americans, Croatians, Ukrainians and the other ethnic groups who came to Monessen for work in industry and have left their mark on the town. The museum often features exhibitions and programs highlighting specific cultural traditions.
