Description

The late John Natili founded this locally famous Italian restaurant, and over 70 years later his son-in-law Vincent Tavolario carries on the family tradition. Tavolario recalls how his father-in-law started the business: “It was just a sandwich shop …he grilled sausage right at the window. You know, peppers and onions, and then spaghetti.” And the cost for a meal in 1939? “Ten cents a sandwich.” In the 1950s, the one-room sandwich shop turned into a restaurant and the upstairs was refurbished to become a second dining room. Eventually a second restaurant was added in the 1970s.

What makes Natili’s so popular? Start with the fresh, homemade pastas and sauce. Tavolario still uses John Natili’s 75-year-old, hand-run ravioli machine to make the delectable cheese- or meat-filled pasta. For many Butler customers, Natili’s is much more than a restaurant – it is a walk down memory lane. Both locations bustle with class reunions, anniversaries, and birthday parties. Tavolario says, “[They] remember it when they were growing up…Countless people have told me they got engaged here, they met their wife [or] husband here.” One couple related that after their wedding years ago they had started their honeymoon by eating at Natili’s: “The first place they came was here!” Fittingly, that couple recently celebrated their 50th anniversary at Natili’s.
