Description

At a time when Coca-Cola and Pepsi weren’t yet internationally known and “soda pop” was a new trend in drinks, the Natrona Bottling Company was opening its factory in the company town of Natrona along the Allegheny River. Ed Welsh started the company in 1904 making Red Ribbon Soda in a variety of flavors and selling it to local grocery stores. In 1939 the Bowser family purchased the company and still owns it today.

Over a hundred years since it was founded, little has changed with Natrona’s method and products. The “pop” is made on site in small batches, using real sugar cane and high-quality ingredients just like when the Company started. It is still bottled using glass bottles on an antique machine purchased from the Coca-Cola Company, and dry ice, which Paul Bowser believes makes a difference to the taste and carbonation of the product. Every bottle is packaged by hand and stored at the factory until it’s ready to be delivered.

While some of the flavors have changed over the years, the Natrona Bottling Company still produces its original Red Ribbon Cherry Supreme, along with Sodium-Free Grape, Home Brewed Style Root Beer, Bauser Champayno, Plantation Style Mint Julep, Jamaica’s Finest Ginger Beer, and Pennsylvania Punch.

You can find their beverages at stores and restaurants in town or buy them from their website – or just do what local kids do on their way home from school: stop by the factory for an afternoon treat.
