Description

When Dave and Anne Dayton moved back to Pennsylvania from Slovakia in 2000 after having spent several months there while Anne taught at the University of Prešov, they knew they had to bring back a piece of the country they had grown to love. They started Slovak Folk Crafts, a “mission shoppe” whose purpose is to “create jobs for Slovaks, invest all profit in Slovakia through charitable gifts to religious, educational, and cultural projects, and educate Americans about Slovakia.”

The shop offers a variety of crafts imported from Slovakia such as hand-made pottery, cornhusk dolls, bobbin lace, and decorated eggs. Though the shop originally focused on Slovakia, it now includes crafts from other Eastern European countries, along with selections from Africa, South America, and other areas of the world.

In addition to the beautiful crafts, the Daytons commissioned three Slovakian wood carvers to build an animated wooden diorama display depicting the folklife of Slovakia. It is said to be the largest animated wood carving in the U.S., at 17 feet long and 8 feet tall, and draws in a crowd of its own. Located near the back of the shop, it invites visitors to sit down for a moment and watch it in action.
