Description

Some churches are more than houses of worship — they’re also works of art. At SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the ceilings and walls are canvases for the beautiful iconography of artist Michael Kapeluck. A lifelong member of SS. Peter and Paul, Kapeluck has dedicated his career to “writing” icons, the special religious paintings venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Artistry is found in other aspects of SS. Peter and Paul as well. For example, each year church members come together to create hundreds of beautiful pysanky — Ukrainian Easter eggs. These colorful eggs are then made available to the public at the annual Pysanky Sale on Palm Sunday. The public is also welcome at the church’s Holiday Craft Sale and dinner in November (the menu always features delicious eastern European treats).

SS. Peter and Paul celebrated its centennial anniversary in 2003. To commemorate the occasion, parishioners constructed an exhibit to pay homage to the church’s forebears and Ukrainian cultural heritage. The exhibit remains on display in the church’s museum.
