Description

The idea for a travelers’ inn high atop this beautiful mountain crest goes back to the creation of the National Road in 1813 under President James Madison. Eventually both the first hotel and the National Road itself fell into disrepair. In the early 20th century when the state of Pennsylvania began to repair the road, a group of wealthy men from nearby Uniontown pooled their resources to build the Summit Inn, completed in 1907. The new hotel quickly gained popularity for its sumptuous accommodations and amazing vistas, attracting such famous figures in industry as Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and Harvey Firestone.

One of the few “grand porch” hotels left in the United States, the Summit Inn is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. With its old-time air of gracious living, the resort offers lodging packages, a 19-hole golf course, swimming pool, restaurant, and a breath-taking view especially at sunset.
