Description

Take a rail journey in miniature back in time through southwestern Pennsylvania, when steel was king, “black diamonds” were heavy industry’s crown jewels, and railroads were the royal way to travel! Founded in 1938 as the Pittsburgh HO Model Railroad Club, the Museum preserves the history of railroads in western Pennsylvania through the hobby of model railroading. The 4,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art HO scale exhibit is a model railroad running between Pittsburgh and Cumberland, MD. Set in the early 1950s when Pittsburgh was the industrial capital of the nation, the display reproduces, in carefully researched detail, houses, churches, steel mills and coal mines, towns, and the flow of the Monongahela and Youghiogheny rivers along the route. The Museum also features an interactive layout of classic Lionel trains for children, displays of antique and Pittsburgh-themed model trains, an old-time railroad ticket office, a snack bar that resembles a boxcar, and a caboose gift-shop with collectibles from the “golden age” of rail travel.
